Detalles del Programa:

NDI launched the Political Leadership Program in 1999, a regional program to strengthen the leadership skills and ability of emerging political leaders to promote the modernization and renewal of political parties. Following a rigorous selection process, the one-year Political Leadership Program begins with an intensive leadership development seminar in the region and continues in-country with the young leaders implementing concrete party-strengthening projects.

Through participant projects supported by NDI, the Political Leadership Program is fostering an on-going regional reform effort with 36 major political parties and movements across the ideological spectrum from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela. Participant Profile Using a competitive application process, NDI selects young political leaders, who range in age from 25 to 35, on the basis of five years of political experience and a track record of leadership and political activism. NDI selects an average of two participants per party, emphasizing a balance in internal party movements, gender, ideologies and key geographical regions.

Graduates of the 1999 - 2005 programs have featured 196 young political leaders, including mayors, municipal councilors, legislators, legislative advisors, indigenous political activists and leaders of youth movements, among others. Spanish-speaking U.S. participants from the Democratic and Republican parties have also participated in the program to share their party experiences. Leadership Development Seminar As the first component of the annual Political Leadership Program, the leadership development seminar is designed to:

  • Enhance the participants’ leadership skills, including their ability to develop and carry-out party-strengthening projects;
  • Increase understanding of party development and renewal processes; and
  • Deepen awareness of global challenges facing parties in the new century.

Drawing on high-level Latin American, European and U.S. political party experts and trainers, NDI helps young politicians develop necessary leadership skills, including communication, political negotiation and strategic planning. Leading political practitioners also provide an overview of mechanisms to democratize parties and improve their outreach to citizens.

NDI’s eighth regional Political Leadership Program will begin with a leadership skills building seminar July 28 – August 6, 2006 in the Dominican Republic and will include participants from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Peru.
