The life and democracy work of Gerardo LeChevallier,  NDI's former director of Latin America and Caribbean programs and country director for Haiti, was celebrated March 8 at a memorial held at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC.   Mr. LeChevallier, 56, was serving as the head of the political affairs and elections units within the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti and died in the collapse of the UN headquarters

Gerardo LeChevallier, NDI's former director of Latin America and Caribbean programs and country director for Bosnia, Haiti and Paraguay, was among those who perished during Haiti’s January 12 earthquake when the United Nations headquarters building collapsed in Port-au-Prince. LeChevallier was serving as the head of the political affairs and elections units within the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

We will gather with his many friends to pay tribute to this dedicated, courageous advocate for democracy.

El 13 de febrero del presente año, tuvimos la oportunidad de poder congregar a los pre-candidatos para la Alcaldía de Lima Metropolitana, militantes y representantes de la sociedad civil con el fin de elaborar de manera colectiva un Plan de Gobierno o una Agenda para la ciudad de Lima Metropolitana en el Perú.

Yesterday, the United Nations confirmed what we had all feared — that Gerardo LeChevallier, NDI's former director of Latin America and Caribbean programs, was among those who perished in the collapse of the U.N. headquarters building in Port-au-Prince. Gerardo, who had led the U.N. political affairs and elections units in Haiti since leaving NDI in 2004, had been reported missing following the January 12 earthquake.
